Bitumen 60/70

Bitumen 60/70 is a type of bitumen, which is a black, sticky, highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It is commonly used in road construction and maintenance, as well as in waterproofing applications. The numbers 60/70 refer to the penetration grade of the bitumen, which indicates its viscosity and hardness. In this case, Bitumen 60/70 has a penetration grade of 60 to 70, meaning it is relatively soft and has medium viscosity. This makes it suitable for various road construction projects, including asphalt paving and sealing.

How to produce Bitumen 60/70

Here’s a simplified overview of the production process:

Fractional Distillation: Crude oil is heated in a furnace and pumped into a tall fractionating tower. The tower has several trays or plates at different levels. As the crude oil vapor rises through the tower, it cools down. Different hydrocarbon components in the crude oil condense at different temperatures and collect on the trays. Bitumen has a relatively high boiling point, so it collects near the bottom of the tower.

Bitumen Separation: Once the bitumen reaches the desired viscosity, it is separated from the other components of the crude oil. This separation can occur through various methods, including vacuum distillation or air blowing. Vacuum distillation removes lighter components, leaving behind the bitumen. Air blowing involves passing air through the bitumen to improve its properties.

Quality Control: During production, the viscosity and other properties of the bitumen are closely monitored to ensure it meets the specifications for Bitumen 60/70. This grading refers to the penetration and softening point of the bitumen, which determine its suitability for various applications.

Packaging and Storage: Once this grade of bitumen is produced, it is packaged in drums, tanks, or other containers for transportation and storage. Proper storage conditions are essential to maintain the quality of the bitumen.

It’s important to note that Bitumen 60/70 is just one of many grades of bitumen available, each with its own specifications and uses. The production process may vary slightly depending on the desired grade and specific requirements of the end application. Additionally, environmental and safety regulations must be followed throughout the production process to ensure safe and sustainable operations.
