PMB Bitumen is one of Aras Petrochemical Company Bitumen products with 25 years experience of producing and exporting to all over the world.
Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) is a type of bitumen (asphalt) that has been enhanced with polymers to improve its performance characteristics. It is widely used in road construction, roofing, and other waterproofing applications due to its superior properties compared to conventional bitumen.
What Is Polymer Modified Bitumen?
PMB = Base Bitumen + Polymers + Additives
Base Bitumen: Acts as the primary binder.
Polymers: Improve elasticity, strength, and resistance to deformation.
Common polymers used:
SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) – a thermoplastic elastomer that gives elasticity and strength.
APP (Atactic Polypropylene) – a thermoplastic polymer that improves heat resistance.
Additives: May include anti-stripping agents, plasticizers, or stabilizers to enhance performance.
Properties of PMB
Property Benefit
Improved Elasticity Better recovery after deformation
Higher Softening Point Resists rutting and bleeding in heat
Lower Temperature Flexibility Withstands cracking in cold weather
Enhanced Adhesion Better bonding with aggregates
Fatigue Resistance Extends pavement life under traffic
Applications
Road Pavements
Highways
Urban roads
Bridges & flyovers
Airports (runways and taxiways)
Roofing Materials
PMB membranes for waterproofing
Durable roofing sheets
Waterproofing
Basements
Tunnels
Foundations
Manufacturing Process
Heating the base bitumen to a workable temperature.
Blending the polymer into the hot bitumen using high shear mixers.
Stabilization with additives to ensure consistent performance.
Storage and transport under controlled temperatures.
Advantages Over Conventional Bitumen
Longer pavement life
Reduced maintenance costs
Better performance in extreme temperatures
Resistance to rutting, fatigue, and thermal cracking
Considerations
Cost: Higher initial cost than regular bitumen
Handling: Requires specialized equipment and temperature control
Compatibility: Not all bitumen types are compatible with all polymers
